Truth in Taxation 2020 Hearing

The Douglas County Board, department heads, local media and a few members of the public attending the 2020 Truth in Taxation hearing held Thursday, December 3. Auditor/Treasurer Char Rosenow prepares the information for the hearing which includes budget information and an interesting summary of the many duties and services provided by Douglas County.

 Board members fulfilled their obligation by approving 2021 budgets for the elected officials as well as setting the 2021 levy and approving the 2021 county-wide budget.

  • The Douglas County Attorney’s budget was approved at $1,104,521.00
  • The Douglas County Auditor/Treasurer’s budget was approved at $1,402,326.00
  • The Douglas County Recorder’s Office budge was approved at $31,559.00
  • The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office budget was approved at $9,312,971.00

Commissioners approved the 2021 property tax levy at $29,143,109.00

Commissioners approved the 2021 budget at $56,738,122.00

Every year the county must pass a new budget to cover the costs of essential community programs and services such as road maintenance, law enforcement and veteran services.

The county receives its revenue from property taxes, state grants, aid, and reimbursement of services, transportation sales tax, federal grants and reimbursement of services, charges, and fees.

The money is used as follows:

  • 25.62% for highways and roads
  • 20.45% for public safety
  • 20.38% for general government
  • 19.52% for health and human services
  • 3.68% for culture and recreation
  • 3.50% for debt service
  • 1.91% for conservation of natural resources
  • 4.94% for other
