Douglas County Services Impacted by Statewide Stay at Home Order

The statewide stay at home order effective 11:59 p.m. Friday March 27 through Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m. will impact several services provided by Douglas County.

  • The state has ordered the temporary closure of the License Bureau effective at 4:30 p.m. Friday. This means all in person transactions are suspended and the drop box on the exterior wall of the license bureau will not be accepting vehicle tab renewals. Residents looking to renew tabs for watercraft, ATVs and snowmobiles can do so at
  • The Douglas County Library must end its curbside pickup, also effective at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 27. E-resources remain. Go to All items currently checked out are not due until April 20 and fines will be waived.
  • All playgrounds in Douglas County parks are off limits during the COVID-19 pandemic. All playgrounds in Douglas County parks are off limits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Trails are open and bathrooms at Kensington Rune Stone Park will be open.Bathrooms at the following County Parks will be open as weather allows.Lake Brophy, Chippewa, Brophy Wayside, Spruce Hill, Curt Felt and Le Homme Dieu Wayside.

County offices will continue to provide essential services. Exterior doors will not be open to the general public. Members of the public are asked to use exterior drop boxes at the courthouse and one for social services at the south entrance to the Douglas County Service Center.

Assessor’s Office

Residents wishing to contact our office should call 320-762-3884 or email us at Requests for Boards of Appeal are by appointment only and must be made by phone. Staff are still here to answer questions. Some questions can be answered by going to the county website and looking under “Parcel Info Lookup” or on the Government tab clicking on “Assessor’s Office”.



Residents paying first half property taxes are asked to use the following options: place payments in the drop box at the south side entrance to the courthouse at 305 8th Avenue West Alexandria, mail tax payments in the envelope provided, pay online by credit card or e-check using the Douglas County website and looking under Online Services and clicking on Pay Property Taxes or using the Property Tax Direct Payment Plan.

The Property Tax Direct Payment Plan is also available at the website. On the home page look for I Want To and under forms click on Property Tax Direct Payment Plan. This plan provides for a tax payment to be automatically taken out of the designated account on the tax due date. 

Essential notary services will be offered by the Auditor/Treasurer’s office by appointment only. Call 320-762-3077.  

Corrections Offices (County/Felony)

To support the governor’s stay at home order, we are open for business but access to the office will by appointment only. Although the offices are closed to the general public, essential services are available by appointment scheduled through the supervising agent.  Applications and other documents will be handled through the service window.


Effective March 20, all court proceedings are suspended for 30 days except for the following: individuals who are in custody and facing some type of time restriction, Emergency Protective Care hearings in CHIPS cases, civil commitment, Orders For Protection, juveniles in detention, and emergency custody matters.

Hearings on evictions will be held “on an emergency basis,” and the parties can appear remotely. Public access to courtrooms will be limited to the civilians involved, attorneys and court staff. The media can request access with 24 hours’ notice. Court staff will continue to process cases and filings.

Land and Resource

The department will continue to process all applications for licenses and permits that are received.  Permits and licenses can be applied for on-line through the county’s website at  Permits for septic systems, land splits, plats, and special permits (variances and conditional use permit), can be applied for by contacting the Land & Resource Office by email ( or phone (320-762-3863).  Staff is available during regular work hours to answer questions, provide information, or assist with the application process for permits.  Application payments can be made via credit card on-line.  Please call with any questions or concerns.

Public Works

All services are available by phone, email and through the internet. To do business in person or make deliveries, please call 320-762-2999 to make an appointment.

Recorder’s Office

Certified Birth and Death Certificates may be requested through the mail or email. 

Certified Marriage Certificates may be requested through the mail, over the phone, or online at

Passport services are suspended.

Marriage license applications are suspended.  For questions or extenuating circumstances, please call.

Sheriff’s Office

The doors to the lobby, located at 216 7th Avenue W. Alexandria, will be locked effective Friday, March 27 at 4:30 p.m. but the door to the vestibule will remain open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A phone is available in this area for assistance. Call 320-762-8151.  The public lobby will also be closed at the jail. A phone in the entrance of the jail will be available for anyone needing assistance.

Social Services

Although the lobby is closed, paper applications will be available inside the vestibule at the social services entrance.
