The Minnesota Safety Council will recognize Douglas County Public Works for excellence in workplace safety and health during its annual conference October 19-20, 2020.

“It is a pleasure to recognize Douglas County Public Works for its award and safety excellence,” said Paul Aasen, president of the Minnesota Safety Council. “Safety is about time and attention and diligence.”

Douglas County Public Works will receive a meritorious achievement award which means public works, over several years, had a better than industry average safety record. Maintenance Superintendent Steve Johansen worked with Douglas County Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hadler to complete the application. He submitted it knowing the county had improved adherence to safety practices and stood a good chance of being recognized.

“I am proud of our guys who are paying attention to safe work habits,” said Johansen. “All of Douglas County Public Works gets credit for this, but I’m especially proud of the highway maintenance staff. We’ve worked hard to reduce on the job injuries in a profession that is inherently dangerous.”

“Having a supportive county board and management provides the foundation for a safe work environment for everyone,” said Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hadler. “Proactive leadership and employee participation are the most critical components and we are fortunate to have that at Douglas County Public Works and the rest our county departments.”

The annual Governor’s Safety Awards program has honored Minnesota employers with exceptional safety performance since 1934. This year’s conference will be held virtually.
