On February 17, 2017 at 12:13 PM the Douglas County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the West Central MN Drug and Violent Offender Task Force regarding a Department of Corrections Warrant on Mitchell Vipond. Vipond was located driving his vehicle near 2nd Ave and Irving St in the city of Alexandria. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Vipond as he was pulling into the Goodwill parking lot, but he did not stop. Vipond continued through the parking lot and onto Hawthorne St and accelerated. A pursuit was iniated and Vipond proceeded eastbound to Nokomis St and then south. The pursuit reached State Hwy 29 and 30th Ave, where a PIT maneuver was used in an attempt to end the pursuit. Vipond then drove his vehicle into the ditch and led deputies northbound on State Hwy 29, where speeds reached approximatley 80 miles per hour. At that time, due to traffic and dangerous speeds, deputies dropped their speed. Vipond was seen going eastbound onto 2nd Ave and then northbound onto Kenwood St, where deputies lost sight of his vehicle. A short time later, an alert citizen called 911 to report a male party was running on foot in the area of Carlos Ave and Nokomis St, behind the Cornerstone Building. Deputies responded to the area and located Vipond walking towards Nokomis St. He was then taken into custody without incident. During a search of Viponds vehicle, methamphetines were found. Vipond is currently being held in the Douglas County Jail awaiting a court appearance on the following charges: Flee Police in a Motor Vehicle, Controlled Substance Crimes, and various traffic offenses related to the pursuit. One Douglas County Sheriff's vehicle sustained minor damage during the PIT maneuver.
