Frequently Asked Questions:

Where do I look to see if there are any job openings with Douglas County? All job openings with Douglas County are advertised in The Echo Press and with the Minnesota Workforce Center before the closing date for the job. Job openings are also posted on the County web site on the Employment Opportunities link on the home page.

How do I apply for a job? Click on How to Apply for answers.

How do I apply for a job with Social Services? Social Services is covered under Minnesota Merit System and has a separate application to complete. After submitting an application to the MN Merit System, they will notify you of an exam time. Based on passing scores, a register is compiled by the State. When a position is open, the Social Services agency requests a register to interview from. For more information go to www.dhs.state.mn.us/agencywd/jobs/default.htm.

Are resumes accepted for job openings in lieu of an application? No. A completed application is required to apply for a job opening.

Should I submit letters of recommendations and/or resumes with my application for a position? Yes, these items should be submitted at the same time the application is submitted.

Can I submit an application when there are no job openings to be placed on file in the Human Resources office? No. Applications will not be held on file until a position becomes open.

When I submit an application for an open position, will that application be considered again for any other positions? No. When an application is submitted for an open position, it is pointed for that specific job only. It will not be considered for any other position. A separate application is required for each job opening. It is recommended that you make a copy of the application you submit for a job opening so that if you wish to apply for another job in the future, you can then submit that copy.

What happens after I submit my application? If your completed application indicates that you meet the minimum qualifications for the position, you will be notified by mail or phone of the next step in the selection process. The next step could be a written test, oral interview, or other assessment. If your application is no longer being considered, you will be notified by mail or e-mail. See also The Hiring Process.

How are people awarded interviews for positions? After a job opening closes, all applications are reviewed for the position that is open. Points are awarded for education and experience relating to the job based upon information on the application. Therefore, it is important to complete all sections of the application in detail. Interviews are then granted based upon total points received.

Will a physical examination or drug testing be required?
Appointment to some positions requires candidates to take medical examinations. These positions include public works, law enforcement and others. Some positions require a drug test and some may require a psychological examination.

What are Veteran Preference Points? Preference points are awarded to qualified veterans and spouses of deceased or disabled veterans to add to the points received off their applications.
